What is emotional eating?
Emotional eating, also commonly known as stress eating, is when people reach for food to suppress difficult emotions. It could be stress, anger, fear, loneliness, rejection, or any other emotion we don’t want to deal with.
Emotions like these often lead to a feeling of emptiness that we fill with food. Food creates a false and temporary sense of “fullness” that doesn’t address the root cause of the issue. We may feel temporarily better when we emotionally eat, but the problem that caused us to eat still remains.
Here are some common signs of emotional eating:
- It comes on suddenly
- You crave specific comfort foods
- You eating mindlessly, often while watching TV or using a smartphone
- You are not satisfied once you’re full and feel the desire to keep eating
- It often leads to feelings of guilt, shame, and resentment.
This guided meditation for emotional eating will help you address the root cause of stress, so you can find other ways to comfort yourself besides food.
