Emotional eating is a common issue that can lead to weight gain, obesity, and binge eating. Meditation can help you discover the root cause of emotional eating, so you can stop it for good.

Meditation is a science-based way to lose weight without diet or exercise. It helps you lose weight and keep it off by positively wiring the parts of your brain that contribute to weight loss. It teaches the brain to turn off cravings, to stop reaching for food out of stress or boredom, and to make healthier choices. As you build your meditation practice, the parts of the brain that lead to weight loss get turned on and you drop the pounds automatically!

This guided emotional eating meditation is your first step toward losing weight with meditation. It’s a great way to use mindfulness meditation to overcome emotional eating. Let’s get started!

What is emotional eating?

Emotional eating, also commonly known as stress eating, is when people reach for food to suppress difficult emotions. It could be stress, anger, fear, loneliness, rejection, or any other emotion we don’t want to deal with.

Emotions like these often lead to a feeling of emptiness that we fill with food. Food creates a false and temporary sense of “fullness” that doesn’t address the root cause of the issue. We may feel temporarily better when we emotionally eat, but the problem that caused us to eat still remains.

Here are some common signs of emotional eating:

  • It comes on suddenly
  • You crave specific comfort foods
  • You eating mindlessly, often while watching TV or using a smartphone
  • You are not satisfied once you’re full and feel the desire to keep eating
  • It often leads to feelings of guilt, shame, and resentment.

This guided meditation for emotional eating will help you address the root cause of stress, so you can find other ways to comfort yourself besides food.

How do I stop emotional eating?

The best way to stop emotional eating is to identify the root cause of why you’re eating, so you can release any stressful emotions. This guided emotional eating meditation will help you do just that!

Once you’ve done this, you can find ways to comfort yourself that don’t involve food. We’ll talk more about this in the next section.

What can I do instead of stress eating?

The key to stopping emotional eating is to find new ways to comfort yourself that don’t involve food. 

Here are some positive and pleasant ways to comfort yourself in times of stress:

  • Take a walk outside
  • Listen to music
  • Read a book
  • Take a bath
  • Write in a journal
  • Take a few deep breaths (this calms the nervous system)
  • Talk to a friend or family member

As you learn new ways to comfort yourself besides food, your urge to stress eat will start to dissolve over time.

Welcome to the guided emotional eating meditation! In this meditation, you will discover the root cause of why you’re eating, so you can learn to comfort yourself without food. I recommend that you practice this meditation every day for at least 30 days to achieve the best results.

Step 1: Begin this meditation in a comfortable position either sitting up or lying down. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.

Step 2: Emotional eating occurs when there is a stressful feeling you’re trying to suppress with food. Try to identify that emotion now. Go deep inside your body and ask “What emotion am I feeling right now?”

Step 3: Observe the emotion and label it for what it is. Are you feeling anger, sadness, fear, or something else? Resist the urge to judge the emotion as good or bad. Simply let it be there.

Step 4: Imagine the emotion draining from your body. Visualize it moving through your body and leaving through your feet.

Step 5: You are now free to comfort yourself without food. You can try reading a book, going for a walk, or any other pleasant activity.

Step 6: Gently bring your attention back into the room and open your eyes to end this meditation. 

This meditation is your first step to stop emotional eating for good. You CAN do it! 🥰
