Finding your healthy, happily ever after is just one Sophie Kinsella book away…
Have your cake and read it too…
A good chick lit novel is like eating a really decadent dessert. There’s a little bit of guilt, but so much pleasure that you don’t even care. Every good dessert starts with a masterful pastry chef. In the world of chick lit books, Sophie Kinsella takes the cake as one of the most masterful of them all. She is truly one of the best chick lit authors out there. Her books are like éclairs, chocolate mousse, and strawberry cupcakes all rolled into one delicious guilty pleasure that you just can’t stop eating. Her newest novel, “My Not So Perfect Life”, is no exception.
Okay, enough about dessert. It’s making me hungry. While Kinsella is famous for the Shopaholic novels (the books are amazing, but do NOT watch the movie), she has written many standalone chick lit novels that are every bit as good. I’ve read every single one of her books and was particularly impressed with “My Not So Perfect Life”. It might, just MIGHT, be one of my new favorites of hers. (Some of my other Kinsella favorites include “I’ve Got Your Number” and “Can You Keep a Secret?” I’m also looking forward to her new book “Surprise Me”, which is being released on February 13th, 2018!)
Have you ever exaggerated on social media? (Admit it. We’ve all done it before!)
The book follows the delightful, Katie Brenner, a young woman who longs for more out of life. Living in a small London flat and being constantly overlooked at her marketing job, Katie longs for the seemingly “perfect” life of her boss, Demeter. Demeter is brilliant and has a beautiful family and fancy townhouse to boot. Katie, on the other hand, tries desperately to hide her difficulties in work and life through not-so-true Instagram posts hoping that one day those posts will become her reality.
Just as things start looking up for Katie (she’s met a cute guy, she’s making friends at work), Demeter fires her. While Katie is crestfallen, she’s still determined to make her mark. She returns home to her family farm to help her dad market his new “glamping” business. When Demeter shows up as a guest, Katie’s two worlds collide in an unexpected and life changing way that results in both hilarity and heart.
I can relate to that!
What I love most about “My Not So Perfect Life” life is that the story is so relatable. It’s written in a way that makes you feel for all the characters and really transports you into their world. It’s a lesson in empathy, bravery, and compassion. “My Not So Perfect Life” seeks the answers to questions we all ask ourselves on occasion, but does so in a fun and lighthearted way. What makes for a happy and fulfilled life? Is anyone’s life as perfect as it seems?
We’ve all felt that feeling of dissatisfaction and unhappiness when we see someone who seems to have all the things we want in life. In my case, “My Not So Perfect Life” was actually the first book I read as I was recovering from chronic pain and illness. I found myself constantly looking at other seemingly vibrant and healthy young people my age and feeling jealous, like I got a raw deal out of life. It wasn’t until I began meditating that I was able to turn away from this perspective and start living a happier life, despite my pain. This book teaches some of the same principles that my meditation practice taught me. Kinsella’s story ultimately shows us that what constitutes as the so-called “perfect life” is the willingness to change one’s perspective and delve a bit deeper into ourselves and examine our desires.
The story that Kinsella weaves is not only riveting, but also laugh-out-loud funny and extremely relatable. Whether you’re a chick lit lover or have never even heard of Sophie Kinsella, this book has something for everyone. Ultimately, this book is about one woman’s journey toward finding her healthy, happily ever after. That’s right—it’s the perfect fit for my F&F fans.
Yay for books! Now didn’t you mention dessert earlier?
Now, excuse me, while I go read a Sophie Kinsella book, while eating my delicious (but healthy!) Paleo Chocolate Raspberry Mousse with Vanilla Cream. It’s creamy, dreamy, and the perfect complement to this delicious novel. Between Kinsella’s masterful storytelling and the healthy avocado in this gorgeous chocolate mousse, I am feeling all the pleasure with no guilt whatsoever. 🙂
