Hi, my name is Alyssa! Welcome to Flaxseeds & Fairytales (F&F). I’m so happy you’re here! I want to help you find your very own happily ever after through a balanced approach to health and wellness. Together, we’ll make all your health and happiness dreams come true!
Do you believe in magic? To me, health is magic. When you’re healthy—really, truly healthy— you feel like you can do anything. You don’t need magic fairy dust to make all your dreams come true because you have the strength, energy, and clarity to do it all on your own. That’s real magic.
Once upon a time, I wasn’t experiencing optimal health. At the young age of 24, I had developed a chronic nerve pain condition that left me feeling exhausted and lethargic. There were days when I was in so much pain, I couldn’t even get out of bed. But, if there’s one thing all fairytale princesses have in common, it’s that they never give up, no matter how many times a villain or obstacle gets in their way.
The turning point in my story was working with a doctor and nutritionist who found the root causes of my mysterious illness. Together, they helped me take a holistic approach to treatment that relied mainly on dietary and lifestyle changes. Through the slow and steady introduction of a healthy diet, exercise, meditation, supplements and overall healthy habits, I was able to regain my health. Not only was I virtually pain-free within 6 months of starting treatment, I was even healthier than before. I had found my healthy, happily ever after. It was a dream come true!
Shortly after, I became an ACE certified group fitness instructor and began dedicating myself to helping others overcome health barriers and lead happier lives. But, my story didn’t end there. I learned a lot from my journey and wanted to share my newfound knowledge on how to live an optimally healthy life with as many people as possible. Next thing I knew; Flaxseeds & Fairytales was born.
So, what’s the inspiration behind the name? From my perspective, everything worthwhile in life starts with seeds. The name, Flaxseeds & Fairytales, comes from the idea that small, consistent efforts toward better health can result in huge, positive changes. Like, in the classic story, “Jack and the Beanstalk”. Jack’s mother throws the magic beans out the window and a beanstalk begins to grow. These tiny magic beans (or “seeds”) would eventually lead to wealth and riches for her and her son.
Every time you make a small step toward better health, you’re planting a seed. Whether it’s cooking a new healthy recipe, trying indoor cycling for the first time, or attending your first meditation retreat, these “baby” steps are slowly but surely leading you toward increased health and vitality. There is no magic wand that will give you the optimal health and happiness you desire. There are only seeds.
Essentially, the name, Flaxseeds & Fairytales, is a more creative interpretation of health (the “flaxseeds”) and happiness (the “fairytales”). Together, these two things combine to give you a more balanced and fulfilling life. A healthy body and a happy mind go hand in hand, and my goal is to help you achieve both.
F&F is a celebration of everyone’s unique fairytale. I strive to provide a variety of honest information and advice that anyone can benefit from, regardless of individual health goals, fitness levels, and backgrounds. I believe that anyone can achieve optimal health with the right guide and the freedom to choose what works for them. Remember those “pick-your-own” fairytale books from when we were kids? The book gave you a few choices on where to take your story, but you got to pick your own path. This is the approach I encourage my readers to take with this blog.
I will provide you with as much quality information as I can about a variety of health and wellness subjects, but you get to pick what’s right for you! I take the time to gain first-hand experience and do extensive research for all my posts, so you can get the best information possible. I explore everything health-related from how to choose the best workout shoes to gluten-free dining in NYC to how to get a better night’s sleep—this blog has something for everyone! While I encourage you to keep an open mind and try different things, at the end of the day, only you can write your healthy, happily ever after. In a day and age where there are so many ads, articles, and books trying to convince you that there’s only one approach to optimal health (their approach), I want to help you pick your own path. Just keep in mind that choosing a balanced approach and making consistent, small changes are both important aspects of finding optimal health. The rest is up to you!
In a way, this blog is like your fairy godmother. It provides you with the sparkling glass slippers and majestic pumpkin carriage, but going to the ball and charming the prince is all you. I believe that health and happiness are not a one-size-fits all. We’re all on a magical journey each day to find what works best. Every person’s path is slightly different. Be the hero of your own fairytale and find your personal healthy, happy ending.
Just remember that happily ever after starts with seeds. Finding true health and happiness is not just about the destination—it’s about the journey. Each post on this blog is a seed that you can use to create your own magical trail through the enchanted forest toward the sparkling castle. While the castle may be the goal, the enchanted forest is just as exciting and wondrous. Food– This section is where I share my delicious, healthy recipes, as well as tips for making healthy choices while eating out. I am allergic to gluten, so all of my recipes are gluten-free. From main dishes to soups to smoothies (my personal favorite!), I want to show you that healthy eating can be both enjoyable and satisfying. It all starts with the right recipes! I am committed to creating and sharing recipes that all my readers will enjoy, regardless of whether they follow a special diet or not. Learn all my tips and tricks for comfortably eating out on healthy or special diets without ever feeling deprived in my Eating Out section. From gluten-free restaurant guides to how to special order when you’re eating out to the best healthy options at some of your favorite chains, this section has everything you need to enjoy eating out no matter what your health goals are.
Fitness– As a certified group fitness instructor, my goal is to help all different types of people add more movement to their lives in a way that is fun and motivating for them. I realize that not everyone loves working out, so I provide practical advice for how to incorporate a little more exercise into your daily life no matter what your fitness level. Whether you’re a novice exerciser or a fitness enthusiast, I promise you’ll find a post here that speaks to you. In this section, I explore all different types of exercise and the tips you need to get the most out of your workout!
Meditation– Here’s the reality: It’s difficult to maintain optimal health when you’re stressed out. Meditation has been scientifically proven to reduce stress and lead to a happier, more fulfilling life. Mindfulness meditation is a secular practice that helps people to stay in the present moment, thus leading to less stress and anxiety. I am passionate about meditation and have taken classes, read tons of books, and practiced daily for many years. Whether you’re just curious about meditation or you’ve been doing it for years, I offer practical ways to get started in or to enhance your practice. I truly believe that we could all use a little more mindfulness in our lives, so I present meditation is an easy-to-understand and approachable way with no jargon.
Travel– Travel is a chance to expand your fitness and wellness in a new location. I find experiencing new places to be an exciting part of a healthy lifestyle! This section explores travel as it relates to health. I explore everything from active escapes to wellness retreats to tours of gorgeous cities around the world. Many people think they will fall off the wagon in terms of healthy diet and exercise while on vacation, but I’m here to show you how a vacation can actually enhance your health and well-being. This section has everything from the top healthy snacks for travel to information on the best hiking trails in the U.S. to the best walking tours around famous sites (get your steps in without even trying!) With stunning photos and detailed descriptions of the places I’ve visited, you’ll join me on amazing trips without ever having to leave your house.
Wellness– While every category on this blog explores a key part of health and wellness, this section looks at topics that aren’t covered in the other categories. This section has posts on everything from getting a better night’s sleep to my favorite natural beauty products to the most inspiring health books. If it involves health and it doesn’t fit into any of the other categories on this site, you’ll find it here!
Interviews– Healthy living is not a one-size-fits all. My goal at F&F is to provide you with all the resources you need to make informed decisions about what’s best for your own health and happiness. In order to provide you with complete information, I have to offer a variety of perspectives. Although my education and personal experiences give me a certain amount of health expertise, that expertise is limited because I’m only one person. When I take the time to interview others, the expertise I can offer you becomes limitless. I’m constantly learning and, as a result, you are too! In this section, I interview fitness professionals, nutritionists, doctors, chefs, bloggers, as well as regular people, just like you, who are learning to embrace a healthier lifestyle. I want you to learn from the best! You might even see the occasional interview from a celebrity (gasp!)
Blogging– F&F is all about helping you find your happily ever after, whatever it may be! For me, a huge part of my happily ever after comes from having my own blog. I get to earn an income and build a brand, while having the flexibility to maintain a healthy lifestyle and prioritize my own well-being. After two years of being unable to work due to my chronic pain condition, I realized that life is too short to not enjoy all aspects of your life, including work. I wanted a job that I was excited about where I could help other people and still have work-life balance. If running your own blog is YOUR idea of a healthy, happily ever after then I want to help you achieve that dream! Whether you’ve already started your own blog or you’re thinking of starting one, this section has all my best tools and tips for starting, growing, and monetizing your very own blog.

Philanthropy– I started F&F in order to help as many people as possible find optimal health and wellness. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to healthy foods or the means for an active lifestyle. F&F’s mission to help EVERYONE live a healthier life, regardless of background or income. In order to support this mission, a percentage of the proceeds from this blog will be donated to a reputable charity organization focused on healthy living (i.e. healthy meals for low income communities, exercise programs for kids). F&F is all about its readers, so YOU get to choose which organization will receive the money. Check out this section for more information on how you can make a difference!

You are now part of the unofficial F&F book club. 😉 In a day and age, where there is way too much watching TV, looking at smart phones, and playing video games going on, it’s super important for our health, happiness, and well-being to spend time with a good book!
