Is it expensive to eat keto?
Yes and no. Keto can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. Oftentimes, it’s keto “specialty products” like MCT oil and exogenous ketones that will run up a bill. While these types of products can be helpful, you don’t need them to be successful on keto! In fact, it’s best to stick to whole and natural foods on keto which is often cheaper than you would think. For example, many people prefer chicken breast because it’s a leaner cut of meat. But on keto, chicken thigh is king because of the extra fat! Boneless chicken breast costs an average of $3.33 a pound, while bone-in chicken thighs only cost an average of $1.25 per pound (see details here) See? Keto on a budget is easier than you’d think when you know your stuff!
How can I eat keto for cheap?
There are several easy ways to enjoy keto on a budget. As I mentioned above, fattier cuts of meat are usually cheaper than leaner cuts which is great for keto. You get your fat and protein together, which means more bang for your buck! No need for expensive MCT oil– all the fat you need is right there on your meat! Eggs, bacon, and cheese are keto staples that are typically inexpensive. Many of the cheapest vegetables, such as broccoli ($1.64 a head), onions ($1 a pound), and bagged spinach ($2 per 9 ounce bag) are low carb and keto friendly. We’ll talk more about specific cheap keto friendly foods in the budget keto shopping list (next section).
Another way to eat keto on a budget is to compare prices when you shop. Wholesale stores like Costco often sell eggs, spinach, olive oil and other keto staples for much cheaper in bulk. I also recommend doing some of your keto shopping online to get the best deals. Amazon often has discounts on keto products, but my favorite online keto friendly store is definitely Thrive Market. There is a $60 membership fee to join Thrive Market, but it’s so worth it! The discounts are HUGE– some of the biggest I’ve seen anywhere at 25-50% off retail. For example, coconut flour (a must-have if you want to bake on keto) is usually $6.99 at my local store but only $3.49 on Thrive Market. I made my membership fee back with my first order and they always throw in a free gift! Thrive Market is hugely helpful for keto on a budget.
