Is it expensive to eat keto?
Yes and no. Keto can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. Oftentimes, it’s keto “specialty products” like MCT oil and exogenous ketones that will run up a bill. While these types of products can be helpful, you don’t need them to be successful on keto! In fact, it’s best to stick to whole and natural foods on keto which is often cheaper than you would think. For example, many people prefer chicken breast because it’s a leaner cut of meat. But on keto, chicken thigh is king because of the extra fat! Boneless chicken breast costs an average of $3.33 a pound, while bone-in chicken thighs only cost an average of $1.25 per pound (see details here) See? Keto on a budget is easier than you’d think when you know your stuff!
How can I eat keto for cheap?
There are several easy ways to enjoy keto on a budget. As I mentioned above, fattier cuts of meat are usually cheaper than leaner cuts which is great for keto. You get your fat and protein together, which means more bang for your buck! No need for expensive MCT oil– all the fat you need is right there on your meat! Eggs, bacon, and cheese are keto staples that are typically inexpensive. Many of the cheapest vegetables, such as broccoli ($1.64 a head), onions ($1 a pound), and bagged spinach ($2 per 9 ounce bag) are low carb and keto friendly. We’ll talk more about specific cheap keto friendly foods in the budget keto shopping list (next section).
Another way to eat keto on a budget is to compare prices when you shop. Wholesale stores like Costco often sell eggs, spinach, olive oil and other keto staples for much cheaper in bulk. I also recommend doing some of your keto shopping online to get the best deals. Amazon often has discounts on keto products, but my favorite online keto friendly store is definitely Thrive Market. There is a $60 membership fee to join Thrive Market, but it’s so worth it! The discounts are HUGE– some of the biggest I’ve seen anywhere at 25-50% off retail. For example, coconut flour (a must-have if you want to bake on keto) is usually $6.99 at my local store but only $3.49 on Thrive Market. I made my membership fee back with my first order and they always throw in a free gift! Thrive Market is hugely helpful for keto on a budget. Keto on a Budget: Grocery List
Ready to do keto on a budget? Let’s start with a cheap keto grocery list! Here are some of the cheapest keto items for your budget keto shopping list:
- String Cheese
- Shredded Cheddar Cheese
- Deli Ham
- Ground beef
- Ground turkey (dark meat)
- Chicken legs & drumsticks
- Chicken thighs (on the bone)
- Whole Chicken (only buy if you plan to use the whole thing)
- Canned tuna
- Bagged spinach
While these are generally the cheapest keto items at most grocery stores, always check the prices to be sure! Next we’ll discuss some keto on a budget shopping tips, you can use whenever you grocery shop on the keto diet.
Keto on a Budget Shopping tips
- Always buy produce that’s in season for the best deal
- Choose fattier, cheaper cuts of meat
- Limit packaged “keto” foods, which tend to be expensive
- Go to Costco or your local wholesale store and stock up on eggs, cheese, bacon, bagged spinach, and other keto staples listed on the cheap keto grocery list above (buying in bulk is nearly always cheaper)
- If you do need to purchase any pre-packaged keto snacks, sauces, etc, buy them online. Online stores like Amazon and Thrive Market (use my link to get 25% off your first order) often offer deep discounts compared to grocery or health food stores.
Keto on a Budget: Cheap Fast Food
Want to eat on keto for cheap? Many fast food restaurants offer great keto friendly meals at cheap prices. Cheap keto fast food is a great way to eat out, while doing keto on a budget.
Some cheap keto fast food options include:

- Chipotle bowl without rice, beans, or corn
- Bunless subs (aka sub in a tub) at Jersey Mike’s or salads at Subway

Cheap keto fast food can be a real time saver when doing keto on a budget. Just don’t go overboard– the healthiest and cheapest keto food will always be what you cook at home!
