Can you eat cheese on the keto diet?

So let’s get started with one of the questions I get asked most often about the keto diet.  Is it really okay to eat cheese on the keto diet?  So the answer is obviously YES or this keto diet cheese guide wouldn’t even exist, BUT there are some caveats to this answer that I’ll go through with you now.  But first, why did the parmesan swipe left on the cheddar? His pick-up line was too cheesy!

Okay, moving on.  Cheese is generally a great low carb high fat food to enjoy in moderation on the keto diet.  The most common mistakes keto dieters often make with cheese that can stall their weight loss is choosing the wrong cheese or overindulging in cheese.  We’ll discuss the best cheeses for keto and weight loss in the next section.  For now, let’s get into how cheese could stall your weight loss on keto.

Although most cheese is low in carbohydrate content, eating large amounts of cheese can slow your weight loss since it’s high in calories and very easy to overeat.  If you choose to enjoy cheese on the keto diet, you need to balance it with other types of healthy fat and protein.  The moon is not made entirely of cheese and neither is your body (not sure if this qualifies as a “cheese joke” but I thought it was sort of clever 😉).  Just like anything else in life balance and variety is key when it comes to cheese on keto.

Many people also have trouble tolerating dairy, which can cause inflammation in the body and result in stalled weight loss.  If you have any of these symptoms of dairy intolerance, you may want to ease off of dairy for a while and see if your weight loss improves.

What cheese is best on the keto diet?

Oh queso… now that we’ve covered the best way to consume cheese on keto (which is in moderation, in case you missed it), let’s get into our keto diet cheese list!  This is the ultimate keto diet cheese list with the best cheese to eat on keto and the ones to avoid.

The BEST Keto Diet Cheese List

Cheese to Eat on Keto

Burrata Cheese– 0 g carbs per ounce

Brie Cheese– 0.1 g carbs per ounce

Muenster Cheese– 0.3 g carbs per ounce

Cheddar Cheese– 0.4 g carbs per ounce

Mozzarella– 0.6 g carbs per ounce

Gouda Cheese– 0.6 g carbs per ounce

Blue Cheese– 0.7 g carbs per ounce

Cream Cheese– 0.8 g carbs per ounce

Parmesan Cheese– 1.2 g carbs per ounce

Swiss Cheese– 1.5 g carbs per ounce

Cheese to Avoid on Keto 

Cottage Cheese– With 4 g carbs and 4 g sugar per ounce, cottage cheese should generally be avoided on keto.

American Cheese– Although American Cheese is usually low carb with 1-2 g carbs per ounce, it’s highly processed and can stall weight loss if overconsumed on keto.
