What is ketosis?
First, let’s start with the basics. What exactly is “ketosis” anyway? According to WebMD, ketosis is a normal metabolic process that is caused by not having enough carbohydrates from food for your cells to burn for energy. When this happens, your body switches to burning fat for fuel instead and makes ketones in the process. By following a low carbohydrate diet like keto, your body begins burning fat for fuel which results in weight loss. In order to receive full benefit from the keto diet, your body must enter ketosis.
How long does it usually take for the body to go into ketosis?
The time it takes to reach ketosis varies from person to person. For most people, it will take 2-4 days of eating 20-50 g of carbohydrates per day. For others, it could take a week or sometimes several weeks to reach ketosis. If you manage to get into ketosis in 24 hours (which you can do with my 7 easy steps), you will be burning fat much sooner than average.
How do you know if you’re in ketosis?
The best way to tell if you’re in ketosis is to measure your ketones. I recommend using a Blood Ketone Meter like this one because it’s the most accurate way to measure ketones at home. Yes– you have to prick your finger. But it’s a tiny prick, I promise (no passing out for 100 years like sleeping beauty! 😴) If you prefer another method, I recommend a ketone breath meter like this one (still farily accurate) or ketone urine strips like these (less accurate, but cheaper). If you want to go into ketosis in 24 hours, I highly recommend you invest in one of these measuring tools first so you’ll know if you’ve actually made it or not!
So can you really go into ketosis in 24 hours?
This is the part you’ve been waiting for– can you REALLY go into ketosis in one day? The short answer is yes. It’s possible to get into ketosis in 24 hours if you follow these 7 steps. However, there’s no guarantee that you’ll acheieve ketosis in 24 hours as it is also dependent on some factors that are outside of your control. Nevertheless, these 7 easy steps should help you get into ketosis as fast as possible, even if it’s not in 24 hours. If it takes you a little longer, don’t get frustrated! Everyone is different and you should allow your body to adapt at its own pace.
This is a great way to get into ketosis in 24 hours for beginners, after a carb up, or after cheating. It will turn your body into a fat burning machine in just one day!
Anything else I need to know about ketosis in 24 hours?
Before you attempt to go into ketosis in 24 hours, you should know that this isn’t safe for everyone. You’ll likely experience keto flu symptoms (more about that here) and some digestive upset. If you choose to attempt ketosis in 24 hours, you should consult your doctor to determine if this would be safe or effective for you. How to Get Into Ketosis in 24 Hours: 7 Easy Steps!
1. Reduce your carbohydrate intake to 20 grams per day
In order to get into ketosis in 24 hours, you’ll first need to drastically reduce your carbohydrate intake. 20 grams per day or below is generally considered the fastest way to get into ketosis.
If 20 grams of carbs feels like too little for you, you can also try 50 grams first and reduce from there. Always listen to your body and consult with your doctor to figure out what’s best for you!
2. Focus on nutrient dense foods
Focus on simple nutrient dense proteins, low carb vegetables, and high quality fat. Limit dairy, sweeteners, and processed food. Don’t overdo it with super fatty foods like bacon. Keep your diet as clean as possible in the next 24 hours to reach ketosis.
3. Stay hydrated
It is extremely important to stay well hydrated on keto. Your body can’t enter ketosis if you’re super dehydrated and you also won’t feel very well. Carbohydrates store water, so when you cut them from your diet you’ll need to replenish yourself more frequently. You should also add salt (preferably pink himalayan salt like this one here) to your water to keep your electrolytes flowing.
4. Go for a walk first thing in the morning
Exercising on an empty stomach allows your body to use up stored glycogen, so it can start burning fat more quickly. When I was first struggling to get into ketosis, walking first thing in the morning was the best tip my nutritionist gave me. It really worked and, as a bonus, it lessened my keto flu symptoms. Besides walking, you can also try a HIIT cardio workout (like this one) to really expend your stored glycogen fast.
If you have trouble exercising first thing in the morning, try eating a light snack 1-2 hours beforehand.
5. Try intermittent fasting
The keto diet and intermittent fasting are considered the ultimate power couple! Fasting is often used as an easy way to acheive ketosis in 24 hours. There are different types of intermittent fasting. A simple way to fast is to skip a meal. You can also try 16/8 fasting, which involves fasting for 16 hours and eating only during an 8 hour window.
Consult your doctor to determine the safest and most effective form of intermittent fasting for you. And if intermittent fasting isn’t right for you, no worries! You can still acheive ketosis without it– just follow the other steps.
6. Use MCT oil for energy
MCT oil is a healthy fat that helps your body produce ketones and gives you an extra boost of energy. You can take one tablespoon on an empty stomach before your morning walk or throughout the day if you need a boost. I recommend this brand.
7. Get plenty of rest
It’s important that you get a good night’s sleep and plenty of rest while trying to get into ketosis in 24 hours. It will help you maintain your energy. While movement is helpful for acheiving ketosis in one day, you definitely shouldn’t run a marathon or do anything else that is highly stressful on your body. You’ll likely feel a little keto flu-y and blehhh today so save your high powered projects for after your body adapts.
